As an Australian Shepherd breeder in Wisconsin, temperament testing is one of the most important parts of our program.
Every puppy is unique. Our temperament evaluations help ensure each puppy is thoughtfully matched to the right home, lifestyle, and goals.
At Match Dot Pup, temperament testing is one of the most important things we do.
Every puppy is different. Even within the same litter, you’ll see different energy levels, confidence, sensitivity, and ways they interact with people and the world around them.
Because of that, I don’t believe in simply picking a puppy based on looks or order.
🐾 I believe in creating the right match.
Temperament testing helps me understand who each puppy is becoming so I can guide them into the home where they will thrive.
This leads to smoother transitions, more confident puppies, happier, and more successful families.
Each puppy is evaluated through a series of observations and interactions that give insight into how they respond to people, movement, sound, and new situations.
We don’t label traits as “good” or “bad.”
🐾 Instead, each trait is evaluated on a scale—low, medium, or high—to better understand a puppy’s natural tendencies.
From there, I look at the full picture—not just one trait, but how everything comes together.
Stable traits are the characteristics that tend to stay consistent throughout a dog’s life. These are not things we try to change—they’re things we work with.
Understanding these traits helps ensure each puppy is placed in the right environment from the start.
🐾 These traits tell us what a puppy naturally brings into a home.
Adjustable traits are qualities that can grow and strengthen with the right training, exposure, and experiences.
These traits help us understand how a puppy may adapt over time.
🐾With guidance, these traits can be shaped to help a puppy become a confident, well-rounded companion.
Each puppy is observed across multiple traits and evaluated on a scale from low to high.
This isn’t about scoring one puppy as “better” than another.
🐾 It’s about understanding where each puppy naturally falls.
For example:
🐾 Every combination is different—and that’s what makes each puppy unique.
Each puppy has a unique combination of traits.
🐾 These evaluations help us understand how a puppy will respond in different environments and what type of home will suit them best.
Temperament testing isn’t about labeling puppies—it’s about understanding where they will thrive.
| Home Type | Traits We Prioritize |
|---|---|
| Families with young children | Lower reactivity, strong human focus, balanced energy |
| Active homes | Higher energy, motivation, engagement |
| Companion homes | Softer temperament, lower energy, adaptable |
| Service or working potential | Focus, confidence, resiliency, responsiveness |
🐾 This is why we don’t believe in simply choosing a puppy—
we focus on placing each puppy where they are set up for success.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Our role is to:
This takes the pressure off choosing and replaces it with confidence.
What that means for you:
Instead of trying to compare puppies on your own, you’ll have insight into each one’s personality, tendencies, and potential.
🐾 The goal is simple: a smoother transition, a better fit, and long-term success for both you and your puppy.
If you’re looking for more than just a puppy—and want the right fit for your home—we’d love to help.
